Withdrawn paper £20 and £50 notes

Our paper £20 and £50 notes were withdrawn from circulation after 30 September 2022. We replaced them with our current £20 note in 2020 and current £50 note in 2021.

Exchanging old banknotes

You may be able to deposit withdrawn notes at your own bank or with the Post Office. Alternatively, you can exchange withdrawn banknotes with selected Post Office branches or with the Bank of England.

The Bank of England Counter is currently open from 9.30am to 3pm Monday to Friday and is experiencing extremely high demand. There may be long queues and you may encounter long waiting times. We would ask that you kindly consider this when travelling to the Bank to undertake an in person exchange – if you arrive after midday it is possible we will have reached capacity and you may not get served before we close. Unless you require your banknotes immediately, we would suggest sending your banknotes via the post.
